The Amalgam of Everything

I'm Sarah. I watch more TV than the average person knows exists. I go to bed when the sun comes up. Misanthropy is my middle name, or it would be if I had been aptly named. If you have any burning questions, my ask box is and always will be open. Please keep all appendages in the cart at all times and please enjoy your stay.

If I Hear One More Person Refer to Snow White and the Huntsman as a “Dark” Retelling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, I’m Going to Have to Cut a Bitch

Nancy O’Dell introduced it as such on last night’s Entertainment Tonight that featured the summer movie preview, and I wanted to scream.

I don’t remember her exact words, but she said something along the lines of “Snow White’s stepmother sends the Huntsman to find Snow White, kill her, and remove her heart in this ‘dark’ retelling of the tale”.

I don’t know what versions O’Dell has seen or read, but the ‘sending a huntsman into the forest to cut out Snow White’s heart for the queen’s consumption’ is part of the original as collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, and even Disney saw fit to include that plot point in the 1937 film.

Seriously, you wanna talk ‘dark’? Write me a version using the Grimm’s original ending where Snow White kills her stepmother by inviting her to the wedding and forcing her to wear shoes with piping hot coals and dance until she dies. Write me that version and film it. Then we’ll talk about “dark” retellings/reimaginings/whathaveyous.

Snow-White’s godless stepmother was also invited to the feast. After putting on her beautiful clothes she stepped before her mirror and said:

Mirror, mirror, on the wall,
Who in this land is fairest of all?
The mirror answered:
You, my queen, are fair; it is true.
But the young queen is a thousand times fairer than you.

The wicked woman uttered a curse, and she became so frightened, so frightened, that she did not know what to do. At first she did not want to go to the wedding, but she found no peace. She had to go and see the young queen. When she arrived she recognized Snow-White, and terrorized, she could only stand there without moving.

Then they put a pair of iron shoes into burning coals. They were brought forth with tongs and placed before her. She was forced to step into the red-hot shoes and dance until she fell down dead.

The Avengers need good press: in which Xavier thinks that it’s a freaking good idea (but Logan doesn’t).
